Low BTU– This means that your AC will take the extra load to cool the area, and it might not be able to do it, which will, in turn, shorten its lifespan. This switching on and off to maintain the temperature of the space will hamper your AC’s life. And when the temperature rises again, it will switch on. ![]() He would like to obtain permanent, legal status with the goal of becoming a chef. Samba, an illegal immigrant from Senegal, has been working menial jobs in Paris for the past 10 years with two important objectives in mind. Benefiting from a superb cast led by Omar Sy, the Cësar-winning actor of “The Intouchables,” and Charlotte Gainsbourg, one of France’s preeminent actresses (and daughter of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin), supported brilliantly by Tahir Rahim and newcomer Youngar Fall, tackles its topical subject – illegal immigration – with grace and melancholy. It should have been better, but even so, is still good enough. “Samba” is a film by writers/directors Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano, the duo responsible for the wonderful “Intouchables” of a few years back. It’s a shame Samba’s plot didn’t play more to its strengths found in Sy and Rahim’s and in the end it’s a gently touching tale without being a great one.Omar Sy and Charlotte Gainsbourg In “Samba.” Photograph copyright by David Koskas. They deliver the films funniest scenes (a window washing scene in particular) and showcase just what could’ve been had Samba found more for these two actors to do.Ī topical film I’m sure for those situated in France and perhaps the world over in light of the recent refugee crisis’s hitting the news in the last few months, Samba is a quality film that perhaps unfortunately will always be judged alongside the director’s famed predecessor. ![]() Sharing the screen with the always likeable Tahar Rahim (an actor you just know will truly breakout one day) as fellow immigrant Wilson, Sy and Rahim find a groove in their on screen companionship that is both funny and at times emotionally resonate and they elevate the film so much so that you wish the film was centred more around these two newly acquainted friends. Firstly the story at the heart of this drama that has moments of comedy isn’t nearly as attention grabbing as the true life tale at the heart of Philippe’s and Driss’s friendship and the films central romance between Omar Sy’s (returning to work with the directors) illegal immigrant Samba and community worker Alice, played by Charlotte Gainsbourg never takes off, the two sharing an uneasy chemistry and Samba instead finds its winning card in other places. Actually it’s far from it it’s a likeable film that for many reasons just doesn’t contain enough spark or chemistry within it to even come close to bringing the feel good feels that came with the Intouchables. Let’s be frank, Samba neither replicated the box office success or the audience success that the Intouchables found but it’s not like Samba is a bad film. With such success comes expectations however and Nakache and Toledano had their work cut out to make there next project even half of what the Intouchables was, that project was Samba. The thing with the Intouchables was, it was not only a huge box office sensation (particularly in its home country of France) but it was a film that both audiences and critics fawned over so much so that at the time of writing the film holds a steady place within the top 50 of the IMDB Top 250 films of all time. Not a bad haul for a movie that cost around $10 million to make. The amount of money director’s Olivier Nakache & Eric Toledano last film The Intouchables made world-wide upon release in 2011/12. “I’m afraid I might forget who I am one day” Plot – Lowly immigrant Samba (Sy) starts a friendship with community worker Alice (Gainsbourg) after his discovered by French authorities and told he must leave the country his called home for the last 10 years. ![]() Directors – Olivier Nakache & Eric Toledano (The Intouchables)Ĭast – Omar Sy, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Tahar Rahim, Izia Higelin ![]() Scottsdale Mint (formerly Scottsdale Silver) focuses on silver and gold while also offering each in different collectible series. Zuckerberg also has been focusing on the metaverse, investing tens of billions of dollars in the virtual reality concept. Also in question is whether it’s the right move for Meta, which announced tens of thousands of layoffs over the past year amid a tech industry slowdown. READ MORE: Twitter’s head of trust and safety resigns after criticism from Elon MuskĪnalysts said its success is far from guaranteed, citing Meta’s track record of starting standalone apps that were later shut down. The company is working on rolling the app out to more countries but pointed to regulatory uncertainty for its decision to hold off on a European launch. The Irish watchdog is Meta’s main privacy regulator for the EU because the company’s regional headquarters is based in Dublin. Meta has informed Ireland’s Data Privacy Commission that it has no plans yet to launch Threads in the 27-nation bloc, commission spokesman Graham Doyle said. One place Threads won’t be rolled out is in the European Union, which has strict data privacy rules. Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey pointed it out in a snarky tweet saying, “All your Threads are belong to us” that included a screenshot of the disclosure. Threads could collect a wide range of personal information, including health, financial, contacts, browsing and search history, location data, purchases and “sensitive info,” according to its data privacy disclosure on the App Store. Meta’s new offering, however, has raised data privacy concerns. Meta emphasized measures to keep users safe, including enforcing Instagram’s community guidelines and providing tools to control who can mention or reply to users. New users will have to set up an Instagram account. Instagram users will be able to log in with their existing usernames and follow the same accounts on the new app. Posts are limited to 500 characters, which is more than Twitter’s 280-character threshold, and can include links, photos and videos up to five minutes long.ĭespite that, Meta said its “vision is that Threads will be a new app more focused on text and dialogue, modeled after what Instagram has done for photo and video.” On Threads, there are buttons to like, repost, reply to or quote a thread, and users see the number of likes and replies that a post has received. “That’s one reason why Twitter never succeeded as much as I think it should have, and we want to do it differently,” he wrote. Zuckerberg said in some early replies on Threads that he’s focused on making the app “a friendly place,” which will “ultimately be the key to its success.” The Twitter-like microblogging experience suggests that Meta Platforms has been gearing up to directly challenge the platform after Musk’s tumultuous ownership has resulted in a series of unpopular changes that have turned off users and advertisers. Threads launched in more than 100 countries - including the U.S., Britain, Australia, Canada and Japan - and has already drawn celebrity users like chef Gordon Ramsay, pop star Shakira and actor Jack Black as well as accounts from Airbnb, Guinness World Records, Netflix, Vogue magazine and other media outlets. But his replies to other users did appear. There were some early glitches, including Zuckerberg’s posts - or Threads as they’re dubbed - not loading in several places including the United Kingdom, India and Lebanon. However, pressure washers by their nature demand careful and deliberate handling, both for your sake and that of whatever you’re cleaning.īoth electric and gas pressure washers can damage surfaces. Pressure Washer SafetyĪll the machines we tested were safe to use, and we encountered nothing in them that caused us any concern. Also, gas engine pressure washers are best stored over the winter in the garage or an outbuilding. Today’s alcohol-containing gasoline quickly degrades and can damage fuel-system parts like carburetors and gas lines. Not to mention you have to be careful about fuel degradation. A gas engine is much louder than an electric motor, plus requires maintenance in the form of oil changes, replacement air filters, and a yearly check or change of the spark plug. ![]() The power afforded by a gas engine can drive a large and powerful pump, enabling these machines to shoot water to higher surfaces, clean heavier deposits of mold and dirt, and even slice thick deposits of mud from equipment such as farm machinery, trucks, and off-road vehicles. These are best suited to heavy-duty cleaning. As a bonus, they’re easy to store indoors during the winter. These are much quieter than gas-engine pressure washers, and they need hardly any maintenance. Their motor, cord, and ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) can get extremely hot. They’re not well suited to heavy-duty cleaning or long sessions in the height of the summer. They work well on wood and synthetic decks that need only gentle cleaning, all types of outdoor furniture, single-floor ranch houses, all types of exterior siding, and will clean the undercarriage of a pickup truck. They have enough power for general washing of outdoor surfaces. These are best suited for brief cleaning sessions, running from 15 to 30 minutes. One is not necessarily better than the other, but which you buy will depend on your cleaning needs, budget, and how you feel about maintaining the equipment you own. The pump that provides the high-velocity jet of water out of a pressure washer may be driven by a gas engine or an electric motor. Read our pressure washer background below, then the reviews, and keep scrolling to look at some recent machines that we haven't tested (yet) but that we will be moving through our test cycle in the weeks ahead. Our goal was to find out which are the kings of clean and, of those we tested, we list only the handful of the top performers below. We tested more than a dozen pressure washers, some powered by gasoline engines and others powered by electric motors. Bonus: these machines use less water per square foot to clean than spraying with a garden hose. They not only clean with the mechanical action of high-pressure water, they also scrub with the chemical action supplied from cleaners in the machines' onboard tanks (some machines siphon cleaner out of a nearby bucket). To keep the fun as you get ready for summer and make short work of dirty surfaces, turn to a pressure washer. All this nastiness seems to collect on any outdoor surface from your house's siding and outdoor furnishings to sidewalks and driveways. Outdoor and yard projects kick back into high gear as the weather turns warmer, but so does dirt, mildew, and mold. ![]() This is what we have done throughout the crisis, faithful to our mandate of maintaining price stability over the medium term - and this is what we will continue to do,” he said.ĭraghi also said that no euro zone country faces an inflation risk, which is the bank’s main concern. “The ECB has the crucial role of providing liquidity to sound bank counterparties in return for adequate collateral. Responding to Hollande’s call for more euro zone solidarity, she said Germany had wanted to give the European Court of Justice the power to reject national budgets that breach EU rules but others had objected. “Europe must discuss the growing differences in economic strength between France and Germany,” Merkel said. In a sign of growing strain between Europe’s central powers, Merkel hit out at France in response to Hollande’s proposals for joint euro zone bonds and a joint bank deposit guarantee scheme. “In all likelihood, whatever the outcome, we are going to have a government which is going to find it hard to live up to the agreements they (the Greeks) have signed up to.” WORSENING OUTLOOK “At best, we are going to have a situation that is extremely serious on Monday,” Swedish Finance Minister Anders Borg told journalists. They fell slightly on Friday and European shares gained on expectations of global central bank response. Madrid’s borrowing costs rose above 7 percent on Thursday, a level that is widely considered unsustainable. Such an outcome could drive Greece into default and possibly out of the euro zone, a prospect that could undermine faith in the currency bloc and add to pressure on the finances of bigger economies such as Italy and Spain. The focal point for all is Sunday’s repeat general election in Greece, a knife-edge race that could be won by parties vowing to tear up the harsh economic terms that the European Union and International Monetary Fund imposed as conditions of a bailout for the near-bankrupt state. Two holidays ago, my mother started giving me gifts I would actually wear: a pin-striped blazer, a men’s wallet, and even a skinny tie. Buying me dresses was a way for her to fix a past tarnished by the scarcity she lacked now but it was also her way of fixing me. With a home in the Bay Area, a career in editing and a successful husband in finance to boot, mom had it all. Her childhood princess dreams went unfulfilled. She could never afford the skirts and dresses that she lavished upon me. My mother grew up financially strapped in Kansas with a strict puritanical mother and a dying father. “You’re so ungrateful,” she said, as I opened a full-length purple ball gown on Christmas my senior year of high school and promptly frowned, tossing it to the side. Every family occasion became knock-down verbal warfare, with me fighting for my right to dress as I chose. ![]() But I didn’t want to be the type of girly girl my mother’s narrow sense of femininity mandated, either. I’d often sneak into his room to try them on, tying my father’s pocket watch to the belt loop and twirling it around, pretending I was an old-timey gumshoe. I envied my older brother’s pants and crisp white-collared shirts. I tried on my father’s after-shave and cologne. By middle school, I thought I was a boy born in the wrong body. I wanted to like dollhouses and frilly outfits but, no matter how hard I tried, I didn’t. When I was young, my mom’s anger toward my style of style was so marked that I knew I wasn’t the child she wanted. (At a young age, I already had “Xena Warrior Princess” collectable figurines.) I’m sure my mother thought if boys were more attracted to me I’d get straightened out, so to speak. It occurred to me that she sensed I was gay. “It’s like your Mom wants you to wear slutty clothes,” my friend Julia said, holding up a sequined tube top. “Has she met you?” my friend Amanda asked, laughing as she stared at the rack of multicolored miniskirts and then back at me, a 16-year-old in cargo pants and a breast-obscuring hoodie. Her tactics were notorious with my high school friends, who’d come over after Christmas to survey my loot. Weekends in December became forced marathon shopping excursions in which I tried on skirts and gowns that would later become my presents. ![]() And the holidays were the best opportunity for her to operate on me. She was a middle-aged female Liberace, whose tastes veered toward the laughably eccentric and: a pink shorty robe spackled with butterflies, Lilly Pulitzer skirts, and various camisoles of varied levels of transparency. Here’s how the Python official documentation defines a dictionary. Modules, classes, objects, globals(), and locals() are all examples of how dictionaries are deeply wired into Python’s implementation. Many aspects of the language are built around dictionaries. Dictionaries are a cornerstone of Python. e.g., the key-value pair for all possible win-states would be the following: "win" : Getting Started With Python Dictionaries. Having fallen into thought, I had not seen the traffic lights change. For example, you may see Taehyung call for “hyung” as he hurries over, but he will not think of Namjoon ‘hyung’ in his head, he will simply think of Namjoon. – There are no English equivalents of these word, and so I have kept them as they are, but only when it is used as a direct term of reference. ‘Dongsaeng’ is by either gender for someone younger. – ‘Hyung’ is a Korean designation used by a male to an older male whom he has a close relationship with. For Jimin, Namjoon, and Seokjin’s diary entries, the new character is obviously female and is written as such. Because the gender-neutral term is clunky, and it can be assumed that they are the girls of the Highlight Reels, I have used my discretion to translate them in the feminine third person. In these entries, the character is also given a gender-neutral term. Hoseok and Taehyung call them ‘that kid’ while I have translated it quite literally, it can also be considered as an affectionate way to say ‘that punk’. Some of the later diary entries introduce another character, unnamed but evidently important. To read an introduction to these notes and/or Part 1 (the diary entries before YEAR 22), click here. |
